Structural Integration is a method of hands-on bodywork. Structural work lies between the surface-level focus of circulatory massage and the direct approach of physical therapy. With SI we try to organize the body to find that dynamic relationship between our bodies and gravity.
The “as-a-whole” body is designed to relate to the space around it and the earth underneath in a highly organized way. We expand: there is an inherent, spring-loaded, anti-gravity device within us all. This expansion goes in all directions – down-up, side-to-side, and front-to-back. It is our natural relationship with our world. When we find our natural state of expansional balance we can release pain and discomfort from its roots. We develop grace, ease and efficiency on all levels.
Dr. Rolf taught a 10 series recipe that systematically approached and organized the body to find balance, grace and symmetry within our gravitational field. Structural Integrators, like me, teach these philosophies through client movement techniques and awareness exercises so that the work is challenging and provides for personal growth and a state of ease and well being.
Structural Integrators using the “Rolf method” are taught how to work with conscious movement, thus honoring the client’s innate inner wisdom.
The classic “Rolf “method of Integrative Bodywork consists of ten, 75 minute sessions typically spaced from 1 to 2 weeks apart:
1-3 The Initial Sessions
These first three are known as the more “superficial” sessions. We are generally opening the outer layers of connective tissue and making space so we can go deeper into core levels.
4-7 The Core Sessions
We aim to establish an inside/outside balance of the body and organize the major sections of the torso. This creates what is referred to as the “upper” and “Lower” poles. Finding these poles is essential to give length and stability to the spine and its surrounding tissue.
8-10 The Integration Sessions
Here we are looking for movement that transcends through the body. Fin ding organic free and easy movement through the entire framework of the body. Establishing the duality of connection to the earth and lightness to the sky is taught. These sessions are learning tools that the client can use to stay “integrated” for a lifetime!
Integration is:
function of all of the body's parts brought into a “whole” allowing a smoother, more efficient lightness, competent movement and ease to the persons being.
